The English Department established in 2002, is a part of Al-Kharj Community College along with the departments of Computer Science and Business Administration. It offers diploma in English major and also provides courses in English to support the two departments via offering language skills and specialized courses (Business English and Informational Technology) to help prospective students to succeed in their fields of study.
Over the course of two years, prospective students study linguistics, grammar, language skills, and educational courses. At the outset, they enroll in an intensive program for one semester.
Upon successful completion, they join the actual academic English program where they take courses in linguistics, phonology, syntax, English literature, translation, and the four language skills. In more specific terms, potential students in the Department of English are required to (a) take basic education courses to fulfill college requirements, and (b) take courses prescribed by the department of English. The total number of credit hours in all of the foregoing categories is 78.
1) Intensive English Program (Evening Class):
In the intensive English program, prospective students study 20 credit hours over the period of one semester. In it, they study the four major language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writ¬ing, as well as a basic general language skill course. It aims to improve students' ability in these skills and prepare them to join the English Department.
2) Associate Degree in English language: (Four Levels)
(A) Level One:
At this level, prospective students study 20 credit hours over the period of one semester. Students study Islamic and Arabic Courses along with the four major language skills.
(B) Level Two:
At this level, prospective students study 19 credit hours over the period of one semester. Students study Arabic Course, introduction to translation, and educational technology along with the four major language skills.
(C) Level Three:
At this level, prospective students study 20 credit hours over the period of one semester. Students study introduction to linguistics, translation1, communication skills in English, conversation1, and advanced reading & writing.
(D) Level Four:
At this level, prospective students study 19 credit hours over the period of one semester. Students study career ethics, conversation 2, translation 2, introduction to phonetics & phonology, syntax, and reading in literary texts.
QUALIFICATIONS AND PRE- REQUISITES FOR ADMISSION
1. A recent General Secondary Certificate with a GPA of 70%
2.The student must successfully pass the placement tests held by the English Department at the beginning of each semester.
3.The applicant must be a full time student and if he already holds a job, he must obtain permission from his employer.
4.The General Secondary Certificate must not be more than five years old.
